Though we are just a few weeks into the new NHL season, a few first year players have already made a very favorable impression.
In this article from Bleacher Report, we get a countdown of rookies who are already looking like they are going to have big years. Not surprisingly, at the top of this list is Toronto Maple Leaf Austin Matthews. It would appear that Matthews has not had a very hard transition whatsoever, with 10 points in his first 9 NHL games. This is likely because Austin already has a season of professional hockey under his belt. Though he is an NHL rookie, Matthews spent last season in Switzerland’s professional league and gained valuable experience there. Additionally, he has quite a bit of size to work with, coming in at over 6 feet tall and weighing over 210 pounds. While we will watch to see if he can maintain this success, he is certainly an early favorite for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. Other rookies who have impressed so far include Jimmy Vesey for the New York Rangers, Patrik Laine for the Winnipeg Jets and William Nylander, Austin’s teammate in Toronto.
